Dr. Angela Gomez has over twenty years of experience in the fields of continuing education, instructional design, performance improvement, coaching, mentoring, and project management. Angela's background includes a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Wichita State University in Wichita, Kansas, a Master of Science degree and a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from Texas A&M University.
She is also a Board Certified Bariatric Educator. Dr. Gomez currently serves as Manager of Continuing Education Programs for Cardinal Health Innovative Delivery Solutions. She has served in this position since 2005 and manages the continuing education programs for over 3,000 pharmacists and pharmacy technicians. She has grown the program from 10 offerings in 2007 to over 200 offerings in 2018.
She also assists pharmacists with developing professional development plans and honing their presentation and professional interaction skills. She regularly consults with the Texas A&M College of Pharmacy concerning educational deliverables and operates as an independent consultant to assist companies with the development of documentation and educational materials to bring their products and services to market, and to educate consumers on the proper use of the products.
Dr. Gomez has successfully applied instructional systems design (ISD) principles to eLearning and blended training applications for corporations and government agencies, including Verizon Wireless, Global SantaFe (Transocean), Imperial Sugar, AIM Investments (Invesco), Methodist Health Systems of Dallas, Kenyon International, Service Corporation International, Gables Residential, the Texas Engineering Extension Service, Epsilon, Alliance Data, and University Hospitals.
At the national level, she has presented on behalf of Adobe concerning the following topics: Rapid eLearning: Getting It Done and Doing It Fast, eLearning Basics: Just the Facts, and Training on a Tight Budget. She has presented on behalf of ACPE on designing continuing education activities and on behalf of Adobe concerning the use of eLearning.
She has also presented nationally at the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education conference, the Alliance for Continuing Education in the Health Professions conference, the Texas Continuing Medical Education conference, and the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists Clinical Midyear conference. She is also member of the American Society for Training and Development, the International Society of Performance Improvement, the Alliance for Continuing Education in the Health Professions, and the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (Associate Member).
From an academic perspective, Dr. Gomez has affiliations with the American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education (Reviewer), Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (Field Reviewer), Performance Improvement Quarterly (Consulting Editor), Performance Improvement Journal (Consulting Editor), the Journal of Pharmacy Practice (Reviewer). She served as the developmental editor and project manager for a book published by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists that was written by 19 authors and consisted of 51 chapters. As part of that project, she also authored one chapter and co-authored a second chapter.
She has also served as Instructional Technology/Instructional Design preceptor at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. She serves as a mentor with the Startup Aggieland program at Texas A&M University, which is a student business accelerator that provides qualified students of all majors with a peer-led startup community of like-minded entrepreneurs and mentors to explore business ideas and guide them through the process of establishing their ventures.
Dr. Gomez has a twelve-year-old daughter and resides in Washington County, Texas. Her personal interests include mentoring and coaching students, motivational speaking, traveling, and writing projects. She also serves as a Court Appointed Special Advocate for Brazos, Burleson, and Grimes counties and actively coordinates activities for the Brazos County 4-H Horse Judging Team.

L: Welcome everyone to Two Pills Podcast. I am so excited to have Dr. Angela Gomez with us. She has a specialty in course design and works with continuing education for healthcare professionals. Dr. Gomez -welcome! Thank you so much for being a part of our podcast. Can you tell us about yourself and your teaching Style?
A: Sure. I have a PhD in educational psychology from Texas A&M. I originally had a business degree and then went ahead and got my PhD in something that I was interested in. Educational psychology is based on how the brain learns. It does learn differently between adults and children. I have worked in many different Industries within educational psychology. I have worked in oil and gas, Financial Services, disaster management, but I have worked the last 13 years in healthcare. I have worked for Cardinal Health Innovative Delivery Solutions. The office is based in Houston, but I have worked from home for about the last 7 years now. Our division of Cardinal Health works on managing Hospital pharmacies and Consulting.
L: And can you expand a little bit on educational psychology?
A: When you are putting a course together, there is a model that we follow. It is called ADDIE. You would start with an assessment, design the course, deliver it, then instruct it, and evaluate it. We provide accredited continuing education for the pharmacists and pharmacy technicians who are employed by us as well as those who are managed by us. We provide CE for approximately 3000 people every year.
L: So when you have been doing CE whether it was at Cardinal or at a previous position can you tell us about a style or a teaching strategy that has worked really well and then maybe one that has not worked so well?
A: When I started, most CE was done live. This was not very cost-effective. Therefore, that was one of the first issues that we tackled when I started. We found a more friendly online learning system. I like to say, “Let the content drive the deliverable.” I also like to say that regurgitation is different from application.
L: What would you say is your favorite part of your job?
A: My favorite part is working with the subject matter experts. I think it keeps all of us on our toes. I also really loved that my job is a challenge. My job is different every single day.
L: Do you have any books, podcast, or resources that you would recommend if someone were interested in educational psychology and course design?
A: I recommend the American Society of Training and Development website. One way to know if you are looking at a legitimate course design resource is to see if their objectives include “know” or “understand.” If so, close the page. You want an objective that is actionable and measurable.
L: Switching gears, if you were not working in healthcare or in your current role, what would you be doing for a career?
A: I think I would go into the Endocrinology field of healthcare. I would probably focus on fertility. I think it is an issue for so many people and would be very rewarding. I have also thought about going back to school to be a nurse.
L: My last question for you is what is your overall prescription for life, success, and happiness whether in your job or just in general?
A: For my job, it is the focus on patient care. The biggest lesson I have learned came from graduate school. I was told that the biggest lesson in life to learn is to embrace ambiguity. You realize that things are not black and white; there is a lot of grey. You have to give people the benefit of the doubt and be open-minded.
